History of the Longport Fire Department

The Longport Fire Department’s history dates back to 1908, when a group of local residents, recognizing the need for fire protection, came together to form an organized fire department. The town of Longport, located on the southern tip of Absecon Island, faced unique challenges due to its proximity to the beach and its seasonal population. In its early days, the department operated with minimal equipment, relying on volunteer firefighters to respond to emergencies. The department’s first firehouse was a modest building, and for many years, volunteers used hand-drawn carts and a chemical fire engine. Over time, as Longport grew and infrastructure improved, the department's capabilities expanded. The introduction of motorized equipment in the mid-20th century significantly enhanced their response times and firefighting efficiency.

Throughout its history, the Longport Fire Department has been known for its dedication and community spirit, with local residents volunteering their time and skills to serve their neighbors. In addition to fire suppression, the department also played a role in medical emergencies, especially in the 1970s when emergency medical services (EMS) became increasingly important. The department began offering EMS services, and this part of their mission has continued to grow alongside fire protection.

As Longport’s population increased, particularly during the summer months, the department adapted to meet the demands of both the year-round residents and seasonal visitors. Today, the Longport Fire Department operates out of a modern firehouse equipped with advanced firefighting and emergency medical equipment.
